Lavasha has always seen herself as a success, as a single working mother, it was no easy task. With the additional skills and resources that Dress for Success Twin Cities provided for their clients, it turned her into an empowered woman with her master's in Organizational Leadership,a successful career, and a new internal mindset.
The continued support that she receives from Dress for Success continues to make her dreams a reality.
Lavasha’s Journey
While pursuing her undergrad degree, she needed clothing for her internship and was introduced to Dress for Success Twin Cities. Lavasha initially sought out Dress for Success for a new set of clothing, however what she received in return was more than she could imagine. In 2014, Lavasha was reconnected to Dress for Success by The Jeremiah Program, a national nonprofit dedicated to support single mothers and their children. The accumulated support from both organizations created the proper environment for what was to come next.
Lavasha was a part of Dress for Success' professional development cohort, which taught women how to present themselves in a professional capacity and how to exercise emotional intelligence. During the course work, she learned valuable tools about professionalism: the importance of showing up on time, how to choose professional attire, not assuming, and holding herself and others accountable. The course gave her a chance to look at herself, reevaluate where she was in life, and even positively impacted her relationships with family and friends.
Lavasha's successes continued as she focused on her plan. Lavasha started her long-term goal to get her master's in Organizational Leadership, with the assistance of her Success Coach from Dress for Success. Using some creative planning, her idea of where she wanted to be become her visualizing exercise; in this number of years, she would be in grad school, to that she'd have to have other things in line first, and so on.
Success comes from the self
Since taking the course, Lavasha's definition of success has changed. "There is the stigma that you have to chase success in order to gain it, but that is not true at all". Success, in Lavasha's eyes, is achieved internally. "You have to have internal peace and a sound mind, and all the external pieces will fall in line". Today, Lavasha is living out her dreams. From being actively involved in her son's activities to receiving her master's degree, all because she transformed her way of thinking and existing in the world. She now has the tools to be able to check herself and maintain her self-care through any aspect of life. Lavasha mentioned attending her son's football game is a form of self-care, because it is something that gives her life and where she can practice accountability to someone other than herself. Lavasha credits her success to her continuing journey of practicing empathy towards others.
The Definition of Success
From the on-going support from Dress for Success, her inner determination, and the tribulations she faced, Lavasha's story is one that focuses on inner success. Success is truly how you define it.
