Dress for Success Twin Cities Building Fire
July 26, 2021
Dress for Success Twin Cities, announces further information about the fire that took place in their building on July 16, 2021, and their plans to move forward with their Mobile Confidence Center, a mobile unit that will bring career support services, individualized coaching, and employment attire directly to women in the community. The Mobile Confidence Center will transform our organization’s ability to reduce barriers of access for diverse, low-income women. While Dress for Success Twin Cities was planning to launch the Mobile Confidence Center in the summer of 2022, the fire has accelerated this timeline, and are taking the disaster as an opportunity to serve even more women with this mobile and remote services model. In the aftermath of the fire, employment readiness programming and career support have continued virtually, with only a week delay for their confidence center services.
Early in the afternoon on July 16 there was a fire in the building where the Dress for Success Twin Cities office and boutique are located. Their upstairs neighbors, Small Sums, were the only ones in the building and everyone was able to evacuate safely. While the exact cause of the fire is unknown, it caused a great deal of damage throughout the building and will require an entirely new roof be built. Since the fire has been extinguished, the building has been condemned and deemed uninhabitable. Due to safety concerns, damage, and the uninhabitable nature of the building they will not be accepting clothing donations until they are established in a temporary location.
Everything in the space will require cleaning or need to be discarded due to the damage caused by smoke and water. With the incredible support from community partners, Arc Value Village and Vine and Branches, Dress for Success Twin Cities have ensured that they have been able to meet the immediate employment attire needs of their clients. Confidence Kits are the packages put together for clients who are going to interviews or have just received employment. These kits include employment attire, accessories, shoes, hair care products, make-up, and other necessary toiletries that a woman needs to feel confident for her interview or first day of work. A few of these kits were prepared and ready for delivery before the fire. They are grateful to be working with Clean’n’Press Brooklyn Park and their quick turnaround to ensure the items in these kits are clean, safe, and can go out to their clients as soon as possible.
Dress for Success Twin Cities is working with a corporate partner to determine a temporary location. As they move forward with their capital campaign to build out the Mobile Confidence Center, your continued support is appreciated. To support this effort, consider making a financial donation. You can donate online here or send the donation to the new mailing address: 1430 Concordia Ave. #4302, St. Paul, MN 55104
