Client success story: Astrid’s path to confidence and career growth

Astrid celebrating an academic milestone

Astrid came to Dress for Success Twin Cities (DFSTC) during a period of transition—returning to school after nearly a decade and seeking a path back into the workforce. While pursuing an Accounting degree, she was also rebuilding confidence, clarifying goals, and navigating a career shift. DFSTC’s community, services, and coaching helped her translate determination into momentum.

“When I first connected with Dress for Success Twin Cities, I felt like I was at a complete standstill—I had no job, no financial stability, and no clear path forward.”

Astrid portrait

Beginning again with courage

Astrid described feeling stalled before connecting with DFSTC: unsure how to restart her career while balancing school and personal responsibilities. She had a strong desire to re-enter the workforce and advance in a field aligned with her long-term goals, yet she needed practical support, professional development, and a network to help make progress.

“They didn’t just provide clothing—they offered guidance, encouragement, career coaching, and the kind of support system I never had before.”

Support and services utilized

Astrid engaged with multiple DFSTC offerings that met her at each step:

  • Confidence coaching to clarify strengths, set goals, and prepare for interviews.
  • Career workshops and sessions delivered online and in person to build skills and readiness.
  • Confidence Kits with professional clothing to support interviews and day-one success.
  • Application and résumé refinement with guidance on presenting experience effectively.

“DFSTC helped me refine my resume, prepare for interviews, and think more strategically about my long-term career in accounting and healthcare pricing.”

“Being part of DFSTC gave me a renewed mindset. It helped me stop doubting my potential and start owning it.”

Outcomes and next steps

With renewed confidence and a clear plan, Astrid returned to the workforce and stepped into a full-time role as a Pricing Analyst at CentraCare (40 hours/week). She began this position on April 15, 2022, continuing to advance while completing her Accounting degree. Astrid notes that DFSTC’s encouragement and practical support were important in helping her translate effort into opportunity.

Community makes the difference

Astrid highlights the value of DFSTC’s community—being welcomed, seen, and supported at each stage. From coaching and workshops to clothing and thought partnership, she experienced a continuum of care that centered dignity and progress.

“What I like best about Dress for Success Twin Cities is the genuine sense of support, encouragement, and empowerment that comes from every part of the community.”

Her story reflects what becomes possible when determination meets a strong network of support.

The world of work right now

by Stephanie Silvers

When the world feels like too much, I dive into my work, shutting out my worries and becoming laser focused on the job at hand. I know our clients at Dress for Success Twin Cities depend on us to help them discover new skills, find good jobs, and bolster their financial security.

In short, our organization believes in empowering every woman through employment. Fifteen years in, I continue to find this work endlessly rewarding.

But on top of my other worries — about wars and famine and gun violence and politics, and, yes, what will I make for dinner and will I have time to do the laundry tonight before a big meeting tomorrow — new worries are creeping in to the world of work.

  • Did you know, for instance, that more and more Minnesota companies are requiring employees to return to the office? Not just three days a week, but often four or five days a week.
  • Did you know that daycare costs in Minnesota are among the nation’s highest? Over a single year, the care for an infant in the North Star State costs, on average, a whopping $16,000.* In addition, federal funds, which previously lowered childcare tuition, have dropped significantly this year.
  • And did you know that despite Minnesota’s reputation for being progressive, the salary gender gap persists here? According to Axios Twin Cities (April 1, 2025), men in our state earn, on average, $56,500, while women bring home just $42,200 — or $14,300 less. Only 16 states have a larger gap.

These three factors — a lack of flexibility around office work, the high cost of daycare, and an enduring salary gender gap — are pushing women to quit. It’s true: Between January and June, more than 200,000 U.S. women, age 20 and up, left the workforce, according to the Bureau of Labor statistics. Interestingly, during that same period, 44,000 men joined the workforce.

All of this concerns me, but I’m not alone. Many business leaders, economists, policymakers, women, and their families are also worried about these obstacles, increasingly thrown in the way of women who want to work. And while I love what I do, I’m not looking for this kind of job security.

If you’re a business owner or a leader who cares about this topic, please reach out. I’d welcome the chance to begin a conversation and find out how your company might partner with Dress for Success Twin Cities to help women find jobs. When we work together to find solutions, all boats can rise — especially in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Everyone Has a Role in Empowerment: Highlighting Male Supporters of DFSTC

DFSTC 15-year campaign banner

As Dress for Success Twin Cities (DFSTC) celebrates 15 years of impact, we are proud to reflect on the broad network of individuals who have contributed to our mission. While our services are designed for individuals who identify as women or are gender-expansive, the success of our work has always relied on shared commitment—and that includes the men who advocate, volunteer, donate, and support our vision for a more equitable future.

This month, we recognize several male allies whose involvement reflects what it means to take part in advancing economic equity and community empowerment.

Dan Marshman, board member

Headshot of Dan Marshman As a current member of DFSTC’s board of directors, Dan Marshman brings leadership, time, and thoughtfulness to our work. His commitment extends beyond meetings and governance. At this year’s emPower Her 5K, Dan and his children joined the celebration, participating in a short family interview about what it means to support DFSTC and show up for the community.

This kind of multigenerational engagement reminds us that equity isn’t just a personal value—it’s something we model, teach, and live.

Versique: Corporate partnership and active involvement

DFSTC’s long-standing relationship with Versique is a powerful example of what corporate partnership can look like in practice. Versique has supported our mission through hands-on service, strategic giving, and committee leadership—modeling what it means to show up as a company and as individuals.

Headshot of Willie Pudvah Willie Pudvah plays a central role in Versique’s support of DFSTC. Willie participated in this year's emPower Her 5K and continues to be an active voice in championing equity through workplace partnerships.

Headshot of Kevin Vig Kevin Vig serves on DFSTC’s finance committee, bringing deep insight and thoughtful leadership to our internal operations. He’s also been part of volunteer days at the Wearhouse™, helping ensure our space is stocked, sorted, and client-ready. His involvement reflects a commitment not only to our mission but also to the sustainability and health of our organization’s future.

Additional supporters

Headshot of AJ Pasha AJ Pasha previously served on DFSTC’s board of directors, offering guidance during pivotal stages of organizational growth. As a board member, AJ supported early capacity-building efforts and helped lay the groundwork for future programming. His leadership reflects the power of intentional governance in driving long-term impact.

Headshot of Ed Edens-Sinclair Ed Edens-Sinclair is a steadfast supporter of DFSTC and the partner of development committee member Molly Edens-Sinclair. Ed’s presence at events, fundraisers, and moments of service shows how much impact can come from showing up consistently. His support reflects how community advocacy often happens behind the scenes—with heart and humility.

Connor Elumba with Megan Meuli at the emPower Her 5K

Connor Elumba, a former DFSTC intern, joined our team as a college student and quickly became a valued part of our mission. His presence at this year’s emPower Her 5K—pictured here with DFSTC’s vice president of development, Megan Meuli—underscores the critical role young people can play in the future of equity work.

During his time with DFSTC, Connor contributed to real projects, participated in team events, and built relationships across departments—all while still in school. His involvement showed us how powerful it can be to create space for emerging leaders to gain hands-on experience, see nonprofit impact up close, and walk away with a stronger understanding of community-centered work.

Matt, DFSTC's Success Express driver

Matt Peterson is DFSTC’s dedicated Success Express driver and one of our most reliable volunteers. His role is essential—getting our mobile services to partner sites safely and on time is what allows us to reach communities across the state. From hauling racks of clothing to navigating long-distance travel days, Matt’s calm, steady presence makes it possible for staff and clients to focus on what matters most: connection, confidence, and support.

Whether we’re headed to a reservation, a recovery center, or a rural community event, Matt is there—often the first to arrive and the last to leave. His behind-the-scenes efforts fuel our front-line impact, and we’re incredibly grateful for the care and consistency he brings to every mile.

A heartfelt thank you to all throughout our Positive Network of Support

While we've highlighted just a few names here, there are countless other men—volunteers, donors, mentors, and quiet champions—who uplift our mission every day. From moving boxes to making introductions, from listening with empathy to standing in solidarity, these supporters often work behind the scenes, but their impact is deeply felt. We are grateful for every single one of them.

Want to get involved?

These stories are a reminder that allyship comes in many forms—and there’s room for everyone in this movement. Whether you're interested in volunteering, becoming a monthly donor, or engaging your workplace in service, there are meaningful ways to make a difference at DFSTC.

Corporate groups can support our mission through custom volunteer experiences, fundraising partnerships, and sponsorship opportunities. To learn more, contact Megan Meuli, vice president of development, at [email protected].

Let’s keep showing up—for each other, for our community, and for the next 15 years of empowerment.

Volunteers preparing Confidence Kits at the DFSTC Wearhouse

Confidence kits: Meeting our clients wherever they are

A Confidence Kit is a personalized, career-ready wardrobe package designed around each client’s individual needs so they can focus on interviews, new roles, and the next step in their journey. Kits typically include 10–15 coordinated pieces, plus shoes, handbags, and accessories, with self-care items when available.

By shipping directly to clients, Dress for Success Twin Cities removes common barriers such as transportation, child care, and time away from work—ensuring equitable access to clothing and confidence. This model reflects flexibility, innovation, and care for every client served.

How it works

Each Confidence Kit is curated through a streamlined process that centers client choice and volunteer care:

  1. Client request form. Clients share sizes, job goals, and style preferences (formal, business casual, or activewear).
  2. Volunteer curation. Volunteers assemble a coordinated capsule wardrobe based on the client’s request.
  3. Quality and care. Each kit is reviewed for fit and quality, packed with care, and shipped directly to the client’s door.

Each package includes a postcard with helpful links and a message from the community, reminding clients they are not alone. This gesture extends encouragement and strengthens the connection between clients and volunteers.

Why it matters

Each Confidence Kit represents tangible empowerment, connection, and a pathway to opportunity. The program evolves alongside clients—every milestone, such as securing employment or attending a coaching session, opens another door for continued support.

Inside the Wearhouse™

The Wearhouse™ is a vibrant, organized hub where donations are sorted by size, category, and color to streamline kit creation. Volunteers manage sorting, assembly, quality assurance, and shipping, transforming community generosity into confidence for clients’ first days on the job.

Corporate and community engagement

Corporate volunteer groups play a vital role. Typical 2- to 4-hour sessions include a guided tour, hands-on kit pulling, and a celebration photo. Many groups also help prepare the Success Express mobile unit for community events and support the program through sponsorships or grants.

Growing confidence and career joy with DFSTC

Client Success Story banner

When Mollie first connected with Dress for Success Twin Cities (DFSTC), she was eager to work yet unsure where to begin. With no prior work experience and low confidence in her résumé presentation, she worried that her professional goals might stay out of reach.

Everything began to shift once she discovered DFSTC’s supportive network of resources and community.

"The links that are shared through this organization are AMAZING. I choose the meetings I can make that are prevalent to my growth. I Thank you so much for this Great Platform!"

Accessible services that fit real life

Busy schedules and limited transportation can make professional development hard to maintain. For Mollie, the flexibility of DFSTC’s online classes and Zoom meetings removed those barriers.

"The Meetings on Zoom making it very assesible to jump on there when I can. Mingle with other ladies. Share our story's. Also, engaging in our career goals. Gaining knowledge helps me grow into someone I thought I'd never be. Happy, and loving my job."

Through these sessions, Mollie built practical skills and a strong peer network. DFSTC’s Confidence Kit, complete with professional clothing, helped her feel ready for interviews and new opportunities.

From uncertainty to fulfillment

Before starting with DFSTC, Mollie described herself as having “no work experience” and lacking confidence in her résumé. With encouragement and tools tailored to her needs, she transformed those early doubts into excitement for her career path. Today she describes herself as happy and fulfilled in her work.

15 Years of Empowerment — How the Success Express Brings Opportunity Closer

For fifteen years, Dress for Success Twin Cities (DFSTC) has paired practical tools with encouragement so jobseekers can confidently take the next step. Among the most visible symbols of this mission is the Success Express—a mobile boutique and career hub that meets participants where they are, side-by-side with community partners across the metro.

Why a Mobile Hub?

Transportation, time, and caretaking responsibilities can create real barriers to accessing services. The Success Express reduces those barriers by bringing styling, and career-readiness support directly to partner sites—schools, workforce programs, and community organizations—so momentum isn’t lost between intention and opportunity.

What Happens During a Stop

A typical visit includes on-board styling for interviews and the first weeks on the job; one-to-one support to refine resumes, strengthen LinkedIn profiles, and practice interview strategies; and guided next steps to keep momentum going. The environment is supportive and focused—participants leave prepared and clear on what comes next.

Impact You Can Feel

Confidence shows up in a polished resume, a well-fitting jacket, and a practiced answer to a tough interview question. It shows up at partner sites when volunteers—like teams from Securian Financial—share their time and expertise. And it shows up when participants tell us they feel ready for the next step. This is what our 15-year mission looks like up close.

Partnering for progress: How collaboration builds stronger communities

8/27/2025

Collaboration in the nonprofit sector

In the nonprofit world, there is a common misconception that organizations are competing for the same dollars, the same donors, and the same spotlight. At Dress for Success Twin Cities, we believe something different—and far more powerful: we are not competitors; we are co-collaborators.

Our mission is to empower women to achieve economic independence, and we know that no single organization can do it all. That is why we have embraced partnerships that complement our strengths and expand our reach. One example of this is our relationship with Cookie Cart, a nonprofit that provides teens with meaningful employment and training in North Minneapolis.

Shared mission: Dress for Success Twin Cities and Cookie Cart

What began as a strategic partnership quickly evolved into a shared commitment to uplifting families and communities. Cookie Cart focuses on youth employment, while Dress for Success Twin Cities supports women on their journey to financial independence. Together, we are creating an ecosystem of empowerment.

At a recent Power of You event, Cookie Cart provided cookies at cost to help us build our brand and delight our guests. The impact extended beyond baked goods. Our participants learned about Cookie Cart’s mission, and Cookie Cart youth gained exposure to the broader world of workforce development. It was a moment of mutual support, awareness-building, and community connection.

Stephanie Silvers, executive director of Dress for Success Twin Cities, explained, “When nonprofits collaborate, we do not just share resources—we multiply impact. Together, we are building a future where families rise, communities thrive, and hope becomes a legacy”.

Mutual impact and community connection

We often say, “When one woman leaves poverty, she takes three women with her.” The same is true for youth—when one young person finds meaningful work, they can change the trajectory of their entire family. Partnerships like ours matter because we are not duplicating efforts; we are amplifying each other’s impact.

A Cookie Cart representative explained, “The idea was simple—invite youth into a space where they feel valued, supported, and empowered. Cookie Cart was never just about cookies. It was about creating opportunity. When we work together with organizations like Dress for Success, we are not just helping individuals—we are strengthening entire communities”.

Looking ahead: Collaboration as necessity

In a changing landscape, collaboration is not just a nice idea—it is a necessity. By working smarter together, we reduce our footprint, extend our reach, and serve communities more effectively. Cookie Cart brings youth into the workforce; we help women thrive in it. Together, we are building bridges across generations and creating lasting change.

Dress for Success Twin Cities is proud to be one of the premiere agencies supporting women’s employment, with some of the strongest outcomes in the region. We know we are even stronger when we stand alongside other nonprofits that share our values and vision.

Let us stop thinking of nonprofit work as a zero-sum game. Instead, let us see it for what it truly is: a collective movement toward progress. When we collaborate, communities thrive, families rise, and hope becomes a legacy.

If your organization is looking to bring hands-on, practical career support to your community, we’d love to talk. Contact Megan Meuli, VP of Development at [email protected] to explore partnership opportunities.

In a world of uncertainty, it could be any of us

By Stephanie Silvers

Who looks for help at DFSTC?

When people ask me about our Dress for Success Twin Cities clients — who they are, what their stories look like — the truth is that there’s no such thing as a “typical” client. In a world of uncertainty, any one of us might be just a paycheck away from needing services.

Every client has a story

Consider Jamie,* who reached out when she suddenly found herself, at age 48, divorced, juggling childcare and elderly parent care, while also rejoining the workforce for the first time in a long time.

Or Tina, whose addiction recovery journey led her to our door, looking for a new support system and updated job skills.

Or Janine, whose experience with healthcare bills created a precarious financial situation and the need for a higher-paying job with better benefits.

Or Sally, a single mom and formerly incarcerated person, who was looking to turn over a new leaf.

Or Shannon, whose family lost everything during a natural disaster, and that meant completely starting over.

Every DFSTC client has a unique story. But many share something in common: a sudden change that ripples across their lives. Yes, family members and friends can help. But often a woman’s new reality requires more than lending her an ear or a couch.

Asking for help is never easy

Accepting help can be challenging — and asking for help even more so. Women are often the caregivers, tending to everyone else but themselves. And yet, when life becomes unmanageable, that’s when many find their way to Dress for Success Twin Cities.

More than job skills

At DFSTC, we specialize in empowering our clients to find employment success — whatever that may look like for each woman. And that translates into safer and brighter futures. That happens through client-centered programming, including teaching how to create a budget, navigate a computer, and develop digital literacy.

But we offer much more than job skills. We focus on improving health and wellness, increasing emotional intelligence, understanding personal worth, matching outer appearance with inner confidence, maintaining a new way of life, and building a supportive network.

The power of community

That last piece, that community of support, is critical. Our staff walk alongside our clients, offering understanding, knowledge, and encouragement. And our clients do the same for one another.

We know that finding community helps shift mindsets. Over time, clients come to understand that they’re not alone, that they can trust others to help, and that their survival can be a strength.

A hand up, not a handout

At DFSTC, we often say that what we provide is not a handout but a hand up. And that’s true for all our clients — no matter who they are, or where they begin their journey.

2025 Success Summit Highlights

Our 2025 Success Summit was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when community partners invest their time, resources, and heart. Held the day before our emPower Her 5K, the Summit brought together clients, volunteers, and supporters for a day filled with one-on-one coaching, professional headshots, and confidence-building workshops.

We are deeply grateful to Old National Bank for helping make the event possible through both a generous financial gift and hands-on volunteer support. Their contribution allowed us to offer career advancement services and tangible tools that directly support job seekers in preparing for new opportunities. Their commitment to our mission was visible in every part of the day — from warmly welcoming participants at check-in to offering guidance during mock interviews and resume reviews.

These touchpoints are often the difference between feeling stuck and moving forward with confidence.

One of the most inspiring moments of the day came during a keynote speech by Cassie Van Dyke, a former DFSTC program staff member. Her message of growth, healing, and perseverance resonated deeply with clients and staff alike, reminding us why this work matters.
