What Dress for Success Twin Cities Means to Our CommunityAs we celebrate 15 years of Dress for Success Twin Cities, we’re centering the voices of the people who make this work real. This organization has always been powered by community—and what better way to honor that than by hearing directly from those who have walked alongside us? When we asked our supporters to share what Dress for Success Twin Cities means to them, the responses reflected more than gratitude. They spoke to growth, transformation, and the ripple effect of empowerment. Across these stories, three themes emerged. Full-Circle EmpowermentSeveral responses reflected a personal evolution—from receiving support, to becoming someone who gives it. This full-circle impact is at the heart of what we do: walking with people as they grow, and seeing them return to walk with others.
More Than Clothing – A Mindset ShiftWhile suiting is a part of what we do, these reflections highlight something deeper. Dress for Success Twin Cities helps individuals discover their potential and redefine what success means for them—on their terms.
A Community of Hope and PossibilityOthers spoke to the spirit of the community—the resilience of the clients, the dedication of volunteers, and the collective energy that fuels transformation. At its core, Dress for Success Twin Cities is about showing up for one another.
Fifteen years in, we’re still growing—and that’s because of people like you. Your voices remind us that success isn’t linear, and it’s never solitary. Thank you for being part of this mission, for sharing your stories, and for continuing to show up for one another. Here’s to what we’ll build together next.

At Dress for Success Twin Cities, volunteers are the heartbeat of everything we do. As we celebrate 15 Years of Empowerment, we’re shining a light on those who give their time, energy, and heart to support others on their employment journey.
In just the first quarter of 2025, 252 volunteers—including 52 corporate volunteers across 8 groups—contributed 1,631 hours of service. That’s 39% of last year’s total hours already, putting us 14% ahead of pace. This kind of engagement ensures we can show up for every client who walks through our doors. One of those volunteers is Heather. She’s been supporting Dress for Success Twin Cities for several years, bringing her warmth and dedication to every shift. “Volunteering gives me a sense of purpose and a way to connect with others who care,” Heather shared. “I love seeing the confidence in clients’ eyes when they feel supported.” Heather’s story reflects what we hear time and again from those who give their time. During Donation Day, one registrant shared: “It feels good knowing these clothes will help someone show up as their best self.” Another donor simply wrote: “Thank you for making it easy to give back.” It’s this spirit of community that fuels our mission. Every hour volunteered and every item donated helps move someone closer to their goals—and it’s made possible by people like Heather and you. Want to be part of the next chapter in our 15-year journey? Learn how to get involved. As part of our 15 Years of Empowerment campaign, we’re highlighting the people who make our mission possible. This month, we’re celebrating Heather Haavisto-Muir—someone who has shown up with heart, time, and energy for six years and counting. From volunteering at events to helping plan The Power of You and the emPower Her 5K, Heather has become a key part of our community. Heather Haavisto-Muir (Development Committee)
How long have you been involved? 6 years and counting Why did you first get involved? At work, it started as joining the initiative to nurture our partnership with DFSTC (Accenture was already affiliated). Started with 2x’s/month volunteering (clothing drop offs, table events, facilitating professional intelligence discussions on personal brand, writing professional emails, etc). Eventually I was asked to join their Development Committee (that plans the Power of You event and the 5K) and couldn’t pass it up! What about being involved has been most impactful? Engaging with the clients immediately and seeing the looks on their faces when they open their confidence kits. I get an adrenaline rush working with the women in real time. The most impactful thing for me by far has been my involvement with the Challenge Incarceration Program. Why should others consider getting involved? If the mission of empowering women is something you are interested in and stand behind, this is a fun and easy way to be involved. DFSTC is flexible with the time commitments and it’s an easy way to dip your toe into volunteering. Heather’s story is a powerful reminder that showing up makes a difference. We’re so grateful for her continued support and the energy she brings to our mission. Stay with us all year as we continue celebrating 15 Years of Empowerment. This year, The Power of You in Bloom was a celebration of empowerment, resilience, and community as we marked 15 years of impact. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our sponsors, attendees, and supporters, we are thrilled to share that we raised $100,000 to further our mission! From inspiring stories to meaningful connections, this event was a testament to the power of collective action in helping individuals build confidence, grow their careers, and achieve economic independence. A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors This event would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors, whose generosity ensures we can continue serving our community: Flourishing Together Presenting Sponsor
A special thank you to Christopher Beeth of Goff Public, who generously volunteered his time and talent to photograph the event. His incredible work captured the essence of the evening and the energy of our community. We’re also grateful to Madeleine Rush, director of public relations at Goff Public and a valued member of our communications committee, for connecting us with Chris and for her ongoing support. Relive the celebration To everyone who attended, supported, and championed our mission--thank you. Your generosity and commitment help make our work possible, empowering individuals to step into their futures with confidence. Dress for Success Twin Cities started with a vision that has always been more than what the name implies. The idea was to offer a platform of services that would truly bridge the gap into career advancement, career stability, and economic sustainability for women in our community. We knew from the beginning it was never just about clothing, and it is amazing to see what the organization has become since we started serving clients in 2010.
Our services started small with financial literacy, digital literacy, suitings, and the Professional Women’s Group. In the last 15 years, our offerings have grown into a more comprehensive approach including emotional intelligence, health and wellness, leadership programs, and supporting women as they define success individually. All of this became a reality over time because of the countless people who have and continue to show up time and time again; whether as clients, volunteers, staff, board members, partners, or donors. A shared sense of resiliency, vision, grit, and determination from everyone involved is how Dress for Success Twin Cities bloomed into the organization it is today. As we navigate the complexities of today’s world, the need for nonprofits that support women like Dress for Success Twin Cities, remain as important as ever. Women continue to face unique challenges and barriers that demand our collective attention and action. As always, the resources, training, and support that Dress for Success Twin Cities provides will continue to grow and expand with the needs of our community. What has not changed since the organization was founded is our mission to empower women, strengthen entire communities, and advocate for systemic change. We are so excited to celebrate our 15-year anniversary at the Power of You with the Dress for Success community on March 11, 2025. Please join us. Whether you have been involved with Dress for Success Twin Cities for 15 years or started yesterday, your story is worth celebrating.
For 15 years, Dress for Success Twin Cities has worked alongside incredible corporate partners who believe in the power of economic independence. These partnerships have not only strengthened our programs but have also helped transform the lives of the individuals we serve.
To celebrate our anniversary, we’re highlighting the partners who have walked this journey with us—organizations that have supported us through clothing drives, mentorship, financial contributions, and community engagement. Today, we’re honored to feature Versique, Lip Esteem, and Thomson Reuters, three partners whose impact has been instrumental in our mission. Versique: Aligning Careers with Community Impact
Versique has partnered with DFSTC, providing resume and interview preparation support while aligning their business expertise with our mission.
DFSTC Committee Member Stephani LaMantia spoke with Nicole Biczkowski, Marketing Manager, about Versique’s involvement with DFSTC. How long have you been involved in DFSTC? 2012, give or take a year. Why did you first get involved and why do you stay connected? We were looking for a charity that somewhat aligned with what we do. In their case, careers were intertwined with helping these clients get to the next steps in their lives. We also provided resume and mock interview help in the earlier days. What about being involved has been most impactful for your business and employees? This has been in perfect alignment with our Core Values, and the individual stories of the clients are always inspiring. Why should other companies consider getting involved? It is a wonderful organization with impeccable integrity and is highly impactful in our local community. Lip Esteem: From Client to Community Leade
Some of the most powerful partnerships are built on lived experiences. Tameka Jones, owner of Lip Esteem LLC, first came to Dress for Success Twin Cities as a client seeking professional clothing for job interviews. Now, she is a successful entrepreneur and a passionate supporter of DFSTC, even partnering with us and Comcast to provide makeovers, lunch, and professional headshots for women in our program.
Committee Member Marti O’Donnell spoke with Tameka Jones about her journey from client to partner. How long have you been involved in DFSTC? Since it began. Why did you first get involved and why do you stay connected? I first got involved when I was on public assistance and was at the end of the maximum time I could receive it. I needed full-time employment, and the county referred me to Dress for Success to get an interview outfit. I stay connected because they weren’t just a blessing to me, they continue to help other women who are in the same situation I was. My success helps them see that just because they may be in a difficult situation at the time, it doesn’t mean they have to stay there. I’ve continued to be involved as a small business owner and partnered with Dress for Success and Comcast to host an event where we gave the women makeovers, had lunch, and took professional headshots for their LinkedIn profiles. What about being involved has been most impactful for your business and employees? Sometimes your clothing can help you walk into your destiny. When I got a referral to get clothes from Dress for Success, I automatically thought the clothes would be old, stinky basement clothes and I was not excited. I knew what it looked like to dress well professionally and shop at high-end stores, but my life didn’t turn out that way. I grew up in a household that was business class but still found myself in poverty. I didn’t think I was going to want to wear the clothes I was being given. When I walked into Dress for Success and saw the quality of the clothes and the labels, I was extremely impressed, and it changed how I thought about getting help. It taught me I need to look my best and give my best at all times, even when things aren’t working well. Just because you don’t have a job doesn’t mean you have to look like it. Why should other companies consider getting involved? As business leaders, we need to think about people more broadly and at all levels of society. Getting fresh new talent can come from the community around us and it’s important we tap into all matters of society to grow not only our businesses but the world. It doesn’t matter how much money you make as a company if the world outside your four walls is failing. Reciprocity is real. You have to give to receive back. It’s about taking the community and your business a step higher. Thomson Reuters: A Legacy of Support
As one of our original partners, Thomson Reuters has been an integral part of DFSTC’s journey, from launching the Success Express bus to providing career development and programming support. Their partnership has been a key part of our impact, strengthening opportunities for clients through mentorship and skill-building.
Committee Member Marti O’Donnell spoke with Jennie Kraus and Katelyn Swanland, co-leads of TR Women, their Women in Leadership Employee Resource Group. Why did you first get involved and why do you stay connected? It all started with a clothing drive which was so successful we now hold one every summer. During the first donation drop, I met Stephanie Silvers at the warehouse. Stephanie spoke so passionately about her vision for the Success Express bus that we decided to partner to help bring it to life. We were the first company to host the bus in person and DFSTC remains a pillar program for us. We appreciate the connection DFSTC has with the community and how it supports women in feeling confident. It enables them with more than clothes; it boosts the skills and confidence needed to help get them into the career they want. What about being involved has been most impactful for your business and employees? It’s been impactful being able to help local women in bridging opportunities and connecting them with skills we use here at Thomson Reuters, such as programming and AI. Empowering women in our community is one of our company’s core values. We’re committed to our support of DFSTC because they share so many of the priorities we do as a company, such as promoting education, diversity, and inclusion, and partnering with the local community. Why should other companies consider getting involved? It’s amazing to have a true impact on the lives of women who are our neighbors. The range of activities provided by DFSTC makes it easy to figure out where it makes the most sense to get involved, how and where it fits best within your organization, and at what level you want to support. The mission is to help women achieve economic independence by gaining a path to a job, helping in career development, and focusing on the next level of their careers. We love that they provide a range of services – it’s not just about the clothing. It’s job readiness and gaining employment. Partnering with an organization that gives back to the community in this way benefits our company as well by providing skilled employees that make the entire community stronger. Being involved also helps to connect us with like-minded companies with which we can partner and collaborate.
A Future Built on Collaboration
DFSTC’s impact is possible because of partners like Versique, Lip Esteem, and Thomson Reuters, who understand the importance of community investment. Their dedication has helped thousands of individuals gain confidence, skills, and economic independence. As we continue celebrating 15 years, we invite more organizations to join us in making a difference. Story 1 of 15 | Stephanie Silvers, Dress for Success Twin Cities CEO
As we celebrate the 15th Anniversary of Dress for Success Twin Cities (DFSTC), I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. Over the past 15 years, I have had the incredible opportunity to witness and be part of countless transformations, and it brings me an enormous amount of joy to share my personal journey with you. Fifteen years ago, I transitioned from working with unhoused adults to joining DFSTC. Reflecting on this incredible journey, I can say that the biggest highlight for me has been witnessing the impact this organization has had on women over these 15 years. I found a unique opportunity at DFSTC to witness true transformation. DFSTC is different – it offers a way to watch someone truly transform their life, even in the face of unfair systems that can tear you down. Over the years, I have had the privilege to witness and support the journeys of the first women who walked through our doors. These women, who are now an integral part of my life, have achieved massive success, breaking the cycle of poverty and creating better futures for their families. To me, 15 years means we've served over 12,000 women, and that's over 12,000 stories. If they brought just three people with them, that's over 30,000 lives impacted. We’ve created an opportunity and an organization that puts women in the driver's seat – something I’m incredibly passionate about. My journey to becoming CEO was not a predetermined path. I don't know if I ever started the position thinking I'd become the CEO. I enjoyed the program side and working directly with the women. However, as the organization evolved, so did my leadership. I found myself in a position where I could influence the direction and growth of DFSTC, driven by my commitment to the mission and the belief that I could scale it to new heights. My story is a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination that define the spirit of DFSTC. My personal experiences enable me to relate to the challenges women face and my empathy fuels my drive to create meaningful change. I know how challenging it can be – I understand what it means to be at a disadvantage in our society. I wanted to be part of the change I wished to see. As we celebrate 15 years of empowering women, I invite you to join us in this journey. Follow us as we share the stories of extraordinary women whose dedication and passion have been instrumental in transforming lives. Together, we will continue to uplift women, one story at a time, and pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future. Stay connected with us throughout 2025 as we launch our 15 Years of Empowerment campaign, where we will highlight the inspiring journeys of our partners, team members and the people who have shaped this organization. Cheers to 15 Years!

CEO, Dress for Success Twin Cities Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Women Who Powered the Movement in Minnesota and Beyond1/20/2025 Nellie Stone Johnson with NAACP leaders, Minnesota Historical Society As we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this year, we take a moment to highlight an often-overlooked truth: the fight for civil liberties has always been powered by women. From organizing marches and mobilizing communities to serving as critical strategists behind the scenes, women have played an essential role in making Dr. King’s vision a reality. Women have been at the forefront of the fight for civil liberties throughout history, long before the 1960s and continuing today. The civil rights movement of the 20th century drew strength from their tireless efforts, and here in Minnesota, women have played a vital role in championing racial and gender equity across generations. Their work builds on a long legacy of advocacy, courage, and leadership that has shaped the fight for justice at every step. The Women Behind the Movement
Minnesota’s Connection to the LegacyMinnesota has its own history of advancing civil rights, particularly through the work of women leaders:
Whether through programs that empower women to overcome systemic barriers or partnerships that foster equity and inclusion, we carry forward the values of the civil rights movement by creating opportunities for those who need them most. How You Can Honor Their Legacy:
As the year 2024 draws to a close and we reflect on all we have accomplished, we do so with gratitude. We are thrilled to share that we have exceeded our numerical goals for the number of clients served, classes provided, and coaching sessions offered to individuals in career transition. Our clients have made outstanding progress despite facing significant challenges. Last night, our 2024/25 ULead team was the featured guest speaker group for our monthly EmPower Hour class. The Dress for Success Twin Cities ULead program allows clients to apply, interview, and be selected to work closely with DFSTC team members and confidence coaches. This program helps participants develop their leadership skills while serving as client leaders. Clients who join the ULead team use this opportunity to work on their professional career goals and personal development. These clients meet regularly with their assigned DFSTC coaches to discuss their progress and to work through a leadership curriculum provided by DFSTC. ULead team members collaborate with the Volunteer Coordinator in the Wearhouse™, volunteer for Success Express events, and speak on behalf of DFSTC as brand ambassadors. They also work with the Director of Programs, hosting and leading DFSTC classes, as well as serving as guest speakers. The 2024 ULead team members had the chance to introduce themselves to our client community, sharing who they are, what brought them to DFSTC, and how their ULead experiences have impacted them. One client leader, Jennifer, shared her inspiring journey. She fled her country after an abusive ex-husband attempted to gain custody of her child. Without a network or support system and receiving little assistance from the courts, Jennifer and her child left in secret, taking only what would fit in a few small suitcases. Jennifer arrived in Minnesota with the goal of starting over but had no idea where to begin. She learned about DFSTC from another domestic abuse survivor and decided to sign up. At the time, she was in job search mode and knew she needed support. Jennifer described how nervous and uncertain she felt when she first came to DFSTC. Initially, she sat in classes without commenting or sharing her screen. Over time, she grew more comfortable and confident. She began working with a DFSTC coach and eventually secured a great job as a teacher. She also expanded her network and found a stronger circle of support. Jennifer shared that she no longer feels alone. She is more confident as a person and as a mother and is no longer afraid to use her voice or share her story. Jennifer expressed that being a positive role model for her daughter is her greatest joy—a joy we share with her. We are incredibly proud of Jennifer and all our clients for the progress they have made. It is stories like hers that remind us why we do the work we do and highlight the impact it can have. We are grateful for your support in empowering individuals to achieve their goals and become the best version of themselves. Thank you for being part of this journey! We are excited to continue working with this amazing group of clients and look forward to all the great things to come!
