Dress for Success Twin Cities client success story

Client success story: Brenda

When Brenda connected with Dress for Success Twin Cities, she was carrying a lot at once. She shared that she was navigating drug addiction, mental health concerns, and housing instability. Even in the middle of that, Brenda was still showing up for her future and looking for support that would help her stay grounded and keep moving forward.

For clients like Brenda facing multiple employment barriers, career advancement happens with more than just professional clothing. Progress comes from community resource navigation, job search tools and information, encouragement and most of all support through our Confidence Coaching services and online classes.

A steady source of encouragement

Confidence Coaching creates steady, one-on-one support where clients can talk through what they are facing, set realistic next steps, and stay connected to their goals. For many clients, especially those rebuilding stability, consistent encouragement can help sustain momentum during the job search process.

Tools that fit real life

Brenda also utilized online classes. For clients facing housing uncertainty, shifting schedules, or the day-to-day realities of recovery and mental health care, flexibility is essential. Online classes allow clients to build skills and confidence on a timeline that works for them, without needing to choose between growth and immediate responsibilities.

Practical support that helps clients show up

Brenda received a Confidence Kit with professional clothing. This kind of support can reduce one more barrier, ease financial pressure, and help clients feel prepared to walk into an interview, a training program, or a new workplace with confidence and dignity. For clients navigating multiple challenges at once, practical resources reinforce that they are worth investing in and do not have to navigate their next steps alone.

How supporter impact shows up for clients

The services Brenda used are available because supporters choose to stand behind clients. Donor support helps keep Confidence Coaching available for clients who need consistent encouragement and accountability. It also helps maintain access to online learning options and ensures Confidence Kits are available so clients can focus on their next steps.

When you give, you are supporting a person at a point in their journey where steady encouragement, practical tools, and ongoing guidance can make a meaningful difference.

Living With Heart Through Change

by Stephanie Silvers

Change is one thing that most of us hate. And yet it’s something we know is a constant. It’s always coming. Just ahead. Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.

This past year has been full of change — for our state, our nation, and our world.

Rather than dread it (and I often do), these days I’m trying to connect change to courage. After all, the word courage comes from the Latin root word cor, or heart. In other words, courage means living with heart — despite change.

I can think of myriad people living that way. People like Francesco Magisano, a man who lost his vision at age 16 — and who just ran his seventh New York City marathon. People like my friend, Sam, who continues to show up day in and day out to ensure her family and community are supported despite the challenges she faces herself. People who stood up for what they believe in all across the country in 2025. And people like Dress for Success clients who keep working toward a better life despite countless obstacles.

We can have big feelings about what’s happening in our world, but we need to understand what we can control and then let go of those things we can’t. For me, I regularly must remind myself that:

I can’t control the labor market.

I can’t control women’s wealth or wellness.

I can’t control climate change.

I can’t control politics.

What can I put my energy toward?

I can choose to stop scrolling and read a book. I can decide what I put into my body. I can (mostly) determine how many hours of sleep I get. I can set aside my worries and take my dog for a walk, perhaps pausing to touch grass — or snow!

At work, I can share my upbeat energy, I can support clients on an everyday basis, and I can offer them hope tied to actions. For my team, I can give them positive feedback, invest in their development, and offer hybrid and flexible scheduling. All these actions are things I can do, no matter the changes that arise.

These days, we’re all running a marathon, like it or not. How will you and I respond? I know that I could name 20 things I’m passionate about. I bet that’s true for you too. But what will we focus on in 2026? Beyond my work, my family, and my friends, I’m going to concentrate on making a difference in one or two areas. That’s all I can do.

Like so many others who work in the nonprofit world (nearly 400,000 of us do in Minnesota!), burnout is real, so we can’t be all things to all people — even when we want to be. (Remember that idea of putting on your oxygen mask first.)

As we begin a new year, we know what’s coming: change. One change that I am looking forward to is a brand refresh of Dress for Success. Look for it soon.

And no matter what other changes are on the way, we know what we have to do: Let’s live with heart.

Stephanie Silvers is chief executive officer at Dress for Success Twin Cities (DFSTC), where she’s worked since the organization was founded in 2010.

Dress for Success Twin Cities 15-Year Anniversary

Closing Out 15 Years of Empowerment

This year, Dress for Success Twin Cities marked a remarkable milestone—15 years of empowering women to achieve economic independence. Our anniversary was more than a single event; it was a year-long celebration, honoring the transformative journeys of those touched by our mission.

How We Celebrated

  • 15 Stories for 15 Years: Throughout the year, we shared 15 inspiring stories from people who have supported, been impacted by, or helped build Dress for Success Twin Cities. These stories highlighted donors, corporate sponsors, board members, committee members, participants, volunteers, and grant partners—each sharing their journey, motivations, and vision for the future.
  • Community Engagement: We invited everyone—supporters, participants, board members, and volunteers—to share their "why" on social media, amplifying the power of our community and giving everyone a chance to be part of our story.
  • Special Events: From the EmpowerHer 5K to the Power of You event, we celebrated with programming that brought together past clients, program participants, and supporters. These events featured powerful testimonials, videos, and Q&A sessions, showcasing the real impact of our work.
  • Spotlights on Key Partners: We honored corporate sponsors, grant partners, and individual donors, sharing their reasons for supporting Dress for Success and encouraging others to get involved.
  • Success Express Feature: We told the story of the Success Express—our mobile empowerment initiative—which won national design awards and continues to serve communities across the state.
  • Inclusive Storytelling: We highlighted the importance of male supporters and the impact of women in their lives, encouraging broader involvement and celebrating diversity within our network.
  • Giving Campaigns: Our "15 Ways to Give for 15 Years" campaign during Giving Tuesday and Give to the Max inspired new and continued support, ensuring our mission remains strong for years to come.

Every story, every event, and every act of support this year was a testament to the collective effort that has made the past 15 years possible. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who contributed—whether this year or over the last decade and a half. Seeing so many familiar faces come together was a powerful reminder: this work matters, and it’s only possible because of you.

Looking Ahead: 2026 and Beyond

As we close this chapter, we’re stepping boldly into the future. The world of work is evolving, and so are we. Here’s what’s next as we look to the new year:

  • Deepening Client Impact: We’re going further with our clients—building into existing programming and creating opportunities for women to advance in a rapidly changing workplace.
  • Modernizing Our Brand: A new brand identity is on the horizon, starting with a refreshed digital and verbal presence. This evolution aligns more closely with our mission and positions us for greater influence across the workforce development space.
  • Growing Our Team: Additional staff will join us to expand programs and strengthen offerings, ensuring we meet the growing needs of the women we serve.
  • Power of You 2026: Game Changers: Save the date—Tuesday, March 10. This year’s theme, Women in Sports: Game Changers, will spotlight trailblazers redefining the game. It’s a fresh take, and we can’t wait to share more.

Together, we’re not just keeping pace with change—we’re leading it. Thank you for standing with us for 15 years. Here’s to the next chapter of impact, innovation, and empowerment.

Year End Letter Header

Dear Dress for Success Twin Cities Supporter,

When Maria stepped onto our 38-foot Success Express mobile unit this past May, she carried more than just a worn resume—she carried the weight of starting over. A single mother of two who had fled domestic violence, she was preparing for her first job interview in five years. In addition to receiving a huge package filled with professional clothing, shoes, and accessories, Maria began meeting regularly with one of our amazing coaches to encourage and support her as she applied and interviewed for jobs. Over the past six months, Maria has also attended a variety of online classes that helped her gain more confidence in her digital and financial skills.

Maria is one of over 1,000 women we have helped this year.

Behind these numbers are single mothers escaping poverty, immigrants building new lives, survivors of abuse finding their strength, and women returning from incarceration deserving a second chance. Each woman who walks through our doors is fighting for something bigger than a job—she's fighting for independence, stability, and hope. Your gift today will ensure that in 2026, every woman who needs us will find open doors, supportive professionals, and the tools to transform her life.

Here's what your gift provides:

$100 outfits one woman completely for her job interview.
$250 supports a woman with individualized job search coaching.

Sunny finds confidence in a fresh start

Client success story

When Sunny first connected with Dress for Success Twin Cities, she was incarcerated at Shakopee prison and active in the Challenge Incarceration Program. As she prepared to return to her community and reenter the workforce, she was looking for support, encouragement, and a pathway to sustainable employment.

Through in-person sessions and Confidence Kits with professional clothing, Sunny began to see what was possible for her future. She also participated in mock job interviews, which gave her space to practice answering difficult questions and to talk about her criminal past in a way that felt honest and hopeful.

Sunny shared, "I was able to build my confidence by doing mock job interviews and help me explain my criminal past in a way that helped me feel more confident."

In January 2025, Sunny started a new role as a Front Desk Clerk at Kahler Inn ad Suites. Working approximately 35 hours each week, she is building her resume, reconnecting with her strengths, and taking important steps toward long-term stability.

When asked what she likes best about Dress for Success Twin Cities, Sunny said, "I enjoy it all! I'm so greatful to have been connected to such a great organization."

For fifteen years, Dress for Success Twin Cities has walked alongside individuals in career transition with classes, coaching, and professional clothing that support every step of the journey. Client Success Story — Victoria

Victoria in professional attire, reflecting confidence after coaching and clothing support.

Dress for Success Twin Cities (DFSTC) partners with clients navigating barriers to employment, including justice involvement. Victoria’s journey highlights how practical tools and person-centered coaching support a confident return to the workforce.

Before DFSTC Victoria describes the early steps after release as a constant test - assumptions about her past often overshadowed her skills. As a job seeker on Intensive Supervised Release (ISR), she felt ongoing pressure to prove she was more than her record. (ISR is a community-based supervision program following release.)

What helped Through DFSTC, Victoria accessed resume resources, coaching on how to respond to biased opinions, and a Confidence Kit with professional clothing. These supports helped her refine her story, prepare language to redirect bias, and present her qualifications with clarity.

"Using the resources I was given - like help with my resume - and learning how to prepare for biased opinions and respond the right way gave me confidence. I got out on ISR and had to prove I was more than my background."

Moving forward With a clearer professional narrative and clothing that matched the moment, Victoria reports feeling prepared to spotlight her strengths and steer conversations toward her skills and readiness. Her story shows how tailored coaching, practical tools, and confidence-building supports can open doors.

Client success story: Astrid’s path to confidence and career growth

Astrid celebrating an academic milestone

Astrid came to Dress for Success Twin Cities (DFSTC) during a period of transition—returning to school after nearly a decade and seeking a path back into the workforce. While pursuing an Accounting degree, she was also rebuilding confidence, clarifying goals, and navigating a career shift. DFSTC’s community, services, and coaching helped her translate determination into momentum.

“When I first connected with Dress for Success Twin Cities, I felt like I was at a complete standstill—I had no job, no financial stability, and no clear path forward.”

Astrid portrait

Beginning again with courage

Astrid described feeling stalled before connecting with DFSTC: unsure how to restart her career while balancing school and personal responsibilities. She had a strong desire to re-enter the workforce and advance in a field aligned with her long-term goals, yet she needed practical support, professional development, and a network to help make progress.

“They didn’t just provide clothing—they offered guidance, encouragement, career coaching, and the kind of support system I never had before.”

Support and services utilized

Astrid engaged with multiple DFSTC offerings that met her at each step:

  • Confidence coaching to clarify strengths, set goals, and prepare for interviews.
  • Career workshops and sessions delivered online and in person to build skills and readiness.
  • Confidence Kits with professional clothing to support interviews and day-one success.
  • Application and rĂ©sumĂ© refinement with guidance on presenting experience effectively.

“DFSTC helped me refine my resume, prepare for interviews, and think more strategically about my long-term career in accounting and healthcare pricing.”

“Being part of DFSTC gave me a renewed mindset. It helped me stop doubting my potential and start owning it.”

Outcomes and next steps

With renewed confidence and a clear plan, Astrid returned to the workforce and stepped into a full-time role as a Pricing Analyst at CentraCare (40 hours/week). She began this position on April 15, 2022, continuing to advance while completing her Accounting degree. Astrid notes that DFSTC’s encouragement and practical support were important in helping her translate effort into opportunity.

Community makes the difference

Astrid highlights the value of DFSTC’s community—being welcomed, seen, and supported at each stage. From coaching and workshops to clothing and thought partnership, she experienced a continuum of care that centered dignity and progress.

“What I like best about Dress for Success Twin Cities is the genuine sense of support, encouragement, and empowerment that comes from every part of the community.”

Her story reflects what becomes possible when determination meets a strong network of support.

The world of work right now

by Stephanie Silvers

When the world feels like too much, I dive into my work, shutting out my worries and becoming laser focused on the job at hand. I know our clients at Dress for Success Twin Cities depend on us to help them discover new skills, find good jobs, and bolster their financial security.

In short, our organization believes in empowering every woman through employment. Fifteen years in, I continue to find this work endlessly rewarding.

But on top of my other worries — about wars and famine and gun violence and politics, and, yes, what will I make for dinner and will I have time to do the laundry tonight before a big meeting tomorrow — new worries are creeping in to the world of work.

  • Did you know, for instance, that more and more Minnesota companies are requiring employees to return to the office? Not just three days a week, but often four or five days a week.
  • Did you know that daycare costs in Minnesota are among the nation’s highest? Over a single year, the care for an infant in the North Star State costs, on average, a whopping $16,000.* In addition, federal funds, which previously lowered childcare tuition, have dropped significantly this year.
  • And did you know that despite Minnesota’s reputation for being progressive, the salary gender gap persists here? According to Axios Twin Cities (April 1, 2025), men in our state earn, on average, $56,500, while women bring home just $42,200 — or $14,300 less. Only 16 states have a larger gap.

These three factors — a lack of flexibility around office work, the high cost of daycare, and an enduring salary gender gap — are pushing women to quit. It’s true: Between January and June, more than 200,000 U.S. women, age 20 and up, left the workforce, according to the Bureau of Labor statistics. Interestingly, during that same period, 44,000 men joined the workforce.

All of this concerns me, but I’m not alone. Many business leaders, economists, policymakers, women, and their families are also worried about these obstacles, increasingly thrown in the way of women who want to work. And while I love what I do, I’m not looking for this kind of job security.

If you’re a business owner or a leader who cares about this topic, please reach out. I’d welcome the chance to begin a conversation and find out how your company might partner with Dress for Success Twin Cities to help women find jobs. When we work together to find solutions, all boats can rise — especially in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Everyone Has a Role in Empowerment: Highlighting Male Supporters of DFSTC

10/29/2025

DFSTC 15-year campaign banner

As Dress for Success Twin Cities (DFSTC) celebrates 15 years of impact, we are proud to reflect on the broad network of individuals who have contributed to our mission. While our services are designed for individuals who identify as women or are gender-expansive, the success of our work has always relied on shared commitment—and that includes the men who advocate, volunteer, donate, and support our vision for a more equitable future.

This month, we recognize several male allies whose involvement reflects what it means to take part in advancing economic equity and community empowerment.

Dan Marshman, board member

Headshot of Dan Marshman As a current member of DFSTC’s board of directors, Dan Marshman brings leadership, time, and thoughtfulness to our work. His commitment extends beyond meetings and governance. At this year’s emPower Her 5K, Dan and his children joined the celebration, participating in a short family interview about what it means to support DFSTC and show up for the community.

This kind of multigenerational engagement reminds us that equity isn’t just a personal value—it’s something we model, teach, and live.

Versique: Corporate partnership and active involvement

DFSTC’s long-standing relationship with Versique is a powerful example of what corporate partnership can look like in practice. Versique has supported our mission through hands-on service, strategic giving, and committee leadership—modeling what it means to show up as a company and as individuals.

Headshot of Willie Pudvah Willie Pudvah plays a central role in Versique’s support of DFSTC. Willie participated in this year's emPower Her 5K and continues to be an active voice in championing equity through workplace partnerships.

Headshot of Kevin Vig Kevin Vig serves on DFSTC’s finance committee, bringing deep insight and thoughtful leadership to our internal operations. He’s also been part of volunteer days at the Wearhouse™, helping ensure our space is stocked, sorted, and client-ready. His involvement reflects a commitment not only to our mission but also to the sustainability and health of our organization’s future.

Versique volunteer group at DFSTC Wearhouse

Additional supporters

Headshot of AJ Pasha AJ Pasha previously served on DFSTC’s board of directors, offering guidance during pivotal stages of organizational growth. As a board member, AJ supported early capacity-building efforts and helped lay the groundwork for future programming. His leadership reflects the power of intentional governance in driving long-term impact.

Headshot of Ed Edens-Sinclair Ed Edens-Sinclair is a steadfast supporter of DFSTC and the partner of development committee member Molly Edens-Sinclair. Ed’s presence at events, fundraisers, and moments of service shows how much impact can come from showing up consistently. His support reflects how community advocacy often happens behind the scenes—with heart and humility.

Connor Elumba with Megan Meuli at the emPower Her 5K

Connor Elumba, a former DFSTC intern, joined our team as a college student and quickly became a valued part of our mission. His presence at this year’s emPower Her 5K—pictured here with DFSTC’s vice president of development, Megan Meuli—underscores the critical role young people can play in the future of equity work.

During his time with DFSTC, Connor contributed to real projects, participated in team events, and built relationships across departments—all while still in school. His involvement showed us how powerful it can be to create space for emerging leaders to gain hands-on experience, see nonprofit impact up close, and walk away with a stronger understanding of community-centered work.

Matt, DFSTC's Success Express driver

Matt Peterson is DFSTC’s dedicated Success Express driver and one of our most reliable volunteers. His role is essential—getting our mobile services to partner sites safely and on time is what allows us to reach communities across the state. From hauling racks of clothing to navigating long-distance travel days, Matt’s calm, steady presence makes it possible for staff and clients to focus on what matters most: connection, confidence, and support.

Whether we’re headed to a reservation, a recovery center, or a rural community event, Matt is there—often the first to arrive and the last to leave. His behind-the-scenes efforts fuel our front-line impact, and we’re incredibly grateful for the care and consistency he brings to every mile.

A heartfelt thank you to all throughout our Positive Network of Support

While we've highlighted just a few names here, there are countless other men—volunteers, donors, mentors, and quiet champions—who uplift our mission every day. From moving boxes to making introductions, from listening with empathy to standing in solidarity, these supporters often work behind the scenes, but their impact is deeply felt. We are grateful for every single one of them.

Want to get involved?

These stories are a reminder that allyship comes in many forms—and there’s room for everyone in this movement. Whether you're interested in volunteering, becoming a monthly donor, or engaging your workplace in service, there are meaningful ways to make a difference at DFSTC.

Corporate groups can support our mission through custom volunteer experiences, fundraising partnerships, and sponsorship opportunities. To learn more, contact Megan Meuli, vice president of development, at [email protected].

Let’s keep showing up—for each other, for our community, and for the next 15 years of empowerment.
